Local couple opening new performing arts school, bringing music to children PDF Print E-mail

Music will arrive on the streets of Tombstone this summer when the Tombstone Academy for the Performing Arts opens its doors.

Mary and Del Roach, the owners of the Gift of Giving thrift store, are finally realizing their dream of forming a music school for children – a dream they've had since 2007 when they moved to Tombstone.

After finding a lack of music in the local elementary school, the couple decided that they would try to fill the void and provide a service that the schools cannot currently afford. While there is a music program in the high school, the elementary school does not offer musical training.

"The schools are in such straits now that they are just lucky to open the doors every day, and we decided because of that we would set up our own academy," Del Roach said.

Del, a professional musician of 65 years, believes that children should be exposed to music no later than the fourth grade. He believes that musical awareness and abilities help in other areas of educational development including the arts, mathematics and science.

"We have to do this because we are just throwing the kids to the dogs if we don't," he said.

The academy already has six people ready to register; applicants range from as young as two to 65 years old.

According to Mary, lessons will begin at the start of summer, once school ends. The academy will offer private, semi-private and group lessons in instrumental, choral and dance classes for all people above the age of two. Del is one of five instructors.

In addition to music lessons, students will be taught music theory so they can learn the science behind the notes they are performing. The main instructor, Coral LeBlanc, is a string specialist who has recorded and performed on about 14 instruments.

"You will get a lot more than just music, especially with Doc (Del) and Mary," LeBlanc said. "You get lessons in life as well ... Music is a language all itself and kids will feel accomplished by delving into its study."

Mary believes that the academy will encourage more people in the community to become involved with music.

"All you need to play a musical instrument is the desire," LeBlanc said.

Lessons will be held in the couple's thrift store. They are still constructing a dance studio as well as private lesson rooms within the large store, which was previously the high school cafeteria.

The academy will also mark the return of Tombstone's 1883 town band - even replicating their uniforms as close to their original state as possible. Roach hopes that adults and high school students already adept in music will join the band and play downtown and during town parades.

Lesson Prices:
• Private: $35-40 per month
• Semi-private (5-10 people): $25 each per month
• Group (10 or more people): $20 each per month

*Note that the prices are subject to change and can be adjusted by instructors as needed.
