Lunch is on at Walter J. Meyer Elementary School, thanks to action by the Tombstone Unified School District Governing Board at its meeting Feb. 10.
The board voted to reinstate serving lunch at the elementary school, where it's been suspended since the 2008-09 school year due to a $38,000 budget deficit. For the last year and a half, students had to hop on a bus that ferried them to Tombstone High School for their mid-day meal. Karen McCann, lead teacher at Meyer, appealed to the board on behalf of fellow teachers and parents to allow students to eat in their own cafeteria. She estimates students lose approximately 20 minutes of instruction time daily as well as recess due to the commute. Moving lunch back to Meyer would also cut down on disciplinary problems cropping up on the buses, said McCann. Parents and staff, some of whom are licensed food handlers, said they would pitch in to serve lunch, she said. Tombstone Superintendent Karl Uterhardt said he'll put together several cost-neutral options for the board to consider, likely at a special meeting or teleconference. He expects lunches back at Meyer within the next two weeks. In other board news, new members Fred Yale and Jimmy Dotson were sworn in, results of a parent survey were discussed, and enrollment updates for Meyer, Huachuca City Elementary and Tombstone High were given. The next board meeting will be March 10 at Tombstone High School. |
