The investigation into misspending by the Tombstone Chamber of Commerce has made no progress. Marshal Billy Cloud is expecting a report from an investigator in the Arizona Attorney General’s Office regarding whether or not the state will pursue criminal charges. Tombstone City Council requested financial records from the chamber in December 2010. After multiple requests were denied, the council arranged an audit of the chamber by Heinfeld, Meech and Co., an accounting firm that specializes in governmental auditing. The audit, which was completed in April 2011 and passed on to the Attorney General’s Office, revealed years of questionable spending by chamber officers. City Council publicly released the audit after the Epitaph filed a freedom of information request. Cloud said at least one of the chamber’s former officers who was accused of misspending had created a plan to repay the fund. Cloud said no restitution has been made to the Chamber of Commerce during the Board of Police Commissioners meeting on Tuesday. |
