Strategically placed boulders, stagecoaches, and barrels surround a group of  golfers giving the scene a traditional Tombstone feel.

That’s exactly what owner Dale Turner wanted when he decided to build Mad Miners Miniature Golf  in Tombstone’s Helldorado Town, 339 S. 4th St.

“I thought that miniature golf in Tombstone would be a great idea for six or seven years,” said Turner.

The new Helldorado attraction has been catching the attention of more than those 12 and under.

“It’s a great thing for all families to do,” Turner said.

Couples, locals and snowbirds have also come to try the new add-on.

“One golfer even comes twice a week to practice his putting,” said Jaye Kukowski, who runs Helldorado.

In the begining, locals  questioned the proposal of a golf course.

“Lots of people even made fun of us,” Kukowski said, “They tried to tell us it didn’t go with the theme of the town.”

The group pulled their thoughts together and came up with a unique putting green with a twist to fit in with the rest of Tombstone.

“I think this is the only golf course in the country that adds history to miniature golf. People can read about the history of Cochise County while they’re playing golf, or they can just play golf,” Turner said.

Each of the holes stars an educational tablet with a brief description. The first hole describes the Silver Mines, which Tombstone was built on. Hole 10 features the Slaughter Ranch near Douglas while hole 16 uncovers some of the mysteries of Kartchner Caverns State Park.

The course features a total of 19 holes on over an acre of land that resembles the old western theme of the town and its surroundings.

It was put together by Tim and Marcy Ferrick, who spent more than 80 hours a week building the layout.

“They worked from sun up to sun down, seven days a week,” Turner said. “They were the ones who pulled off the theme element.”

With the collaboration of the Ferricks crafting skills and Turners initial ideas, the team put together the course.

“We had different hole designs and so forth,” Turner said, “but when it came to laying it out on the ground and actually building it, he figured it all out. Without Tim, we couldn’t have pulled it off.”

About 90 percent of the golf course is made from recycled or recyclable materials, Turner said.

Golfers are encouraged to take their time to embrace the uniqueness of the golf course, as well as take advantage of the photo opportunities with the stage coach, mining props and natural surroundings.

The course can be completed in around 30 minutes. It is currently only open during daylight hours, but lighting will be coming soon for nighttime golfing.

Mad Miners Miniature Golf is complete for the moment but Turner plans to add additional themed features to it progressively, as well as change the historical plaques when unique ideas presents themselves.
