Summer activities available for youth PDF Print E-mail

In the summer, when fewer tourists come to visit the "town too tough to die," many Tombstone residents are left with limited options as to how to kill time beneath the Arizona sun. For middle school and high school students, however, new summer activities might be able to bring some excitement to the coming months.

"To start there's baseball and t-ball for younger kids," said P.E. teacher Joseph Thomas, who has been teaching physical education at both Tombstone High and Walter J. Meyer Elementary for the past three years. "For high school students, there's going to be an open gym and open weight room starting at the beginning of June where students can come in and play different sports."

According to Thomas, different days of the week will be devoted to different sports. On Mondays and Wednesdays students will be able to play volleyball; on Tuesdays and Thursdays basketball courts are open.

"All of the coaches try and do a little something with their sport over the summer," said Thomas. "For example, one of the volleyball coaches wanted to do a one-weeklong volleyball camp."

There will also be a basketball summer league taking place.

"There's plenty of stuff for kids to do over the summer, it's just a matter if they want to get involved or not," Thomas said.

Although most of the summer activities are sports based, there are others to choose from.

Amanda Telles, a Tombstone High School teacher, offers to take students out of Tombstone to the Future Farmers of America's (FFA) Student Leadership Conference. The FFA, a national organization, aims at educating kids about agriculture in their communities.

"The conference focuses on agriculture, leadership, community support and they give out awards to outstanding students," Telles said. "There are other workshops students can participate in also."

However, most students tend to just relax.

"There's not really much to do over the summer in Tombstone except for ride horses and quads," said Cody Aitken, a Tombstone High School student. "I normally go to the Sierra Vista skate park or to the mall with friends. Some people go to bible camp. I used to go to bible camp also, but now I'm too old."
Others are making an active effort to increase summer activities in the Tombstone community.

"We raised $5,252 for summer youth programs," said Stephen Schmidt, owner of Johnny Ringo's, a restaurant that helped sponsor and attract locals to Johnny Ringo's 9th Annual Golf Tournament, which took place April 25. All proceeds from the tournament went to benefit summer youth programs.

"We've done the tournament for many years back now," Schmidt said. "Different years the money we raise goes to different places, but we've been donating the proceeds for five years or so now to summer youth programs."

The idea for a golf tournament first started when a member of the Tombstone community had an accident while riding on his quad and became paralyzed. Johnny Ringo's first tournament donated all of their proceeds to the young man who was injured.

"The first year was a success so we thought what else could we do for the community?" said Herb Linn, organizer of Johnny Ringo's Golf Tournament for the last nine years. "This year was a success and what we made was substantial. This is really the only money the summer youth programs get. It's something that needs to be done and we're proud of ourselves for doing it. It makes you happy to give the kids something to do over the summer. I think everybody had a good time, and it was good thing all around."
